Ignition parts for a modern car are managed by an engine control module (ECM). Unlike older cars where the ignition system is controlled separately, ECMs manage a variety of functions. These include fuel injection, ignition timing, and emission control. Cars with gas engines, whether old or new, still rely on spark plugs to ignite the air-fuel mixture. Cars with diesel engines utilize compression ignition to burn fuel.
What Causes the Ignition to Stop Working?
Two parts of the ignition system that often go bad are the ignition coil and the ignition switch. When the ignition coil is unable to supply enough power to the spark plugs, fuel will not ignite properly. This leads to engine misfires, resulting in your car stalling or shutting off during a stop. When the ignition switch fails, it will be unable to signal the starter solenoid, which is responsible for engaging the starter motor. This means your car won’t start when you turn the key or press the engine start button.
