Radiators vary by design and materials depending on your car. But they serve the same function of keeping the engine of your Mercedes cool to run without overheating.

Main Parts of the Radiator

The radiator core is where heat exchange takes place. The core is made of aluminum or copper tubes where coolant flows. The coolant is a mixture of water and antifreeze that is stored in the radiator tank. As the coolant takes heat from engine parts, the radiator fan pushes air through the core, dissipating heat from the coolant. To regulate the flow of coolant, a thermostat opens or closes based on the engine’s temperature. When the temperature increases, the thermostat opens for coolant to flow into the radiator. Once the temperature reaches a desired level, the thermostat closes. A pressure cap, also called the radiator cap, maintains the pressure of the entire cooling system. It prevents the coolant from overheating and improves cooling efficiency. Lastly, the radiator hose connects all radiator parts. Coolant flows through the hose from the radiator tank to the core, then back again.

How to Tell if a Radiator Hose Needs Replacing
